S 377A
Wednesday, October 24, 2007

S 377A, the recent hot topic about criminalising gay sex between men. The movement to repeal this law has been unsuccessful. And I do think this is the appropriate move that the government should take now. For the majority of the public still wants to keep traditional family values and morals. Such a change in the law would make the majority uncomfortable. The bottom line is, Singapore isn't ready to accept it yet, and so we should just keep the law the way it is.

What irks me the most is why other nations love to butt in and convince Singapore to change it's laws. Citing that our values are archaic and draconian. We are a sovereign nation based on democracy. If the majority of the public does want the law in place, who are the other countries to label us as a draconian nation? After all we are the ones who choose to put the law in place, and they have no say about it. I think what is important is that we do not follow the bandwagon blindly. If other developed nations have such a policy or law, it may not necessarily work for us. What's most important is that we follow our own values and beliefs instead just jumping onto the "Developed Nations" bandwagon. It's the same with life, we as individuals should not be contented with being sheep. I think as a nation, we have to adopt this "I shall not be a sheep" mentality as well.

I digress, but as the way things are, I think the government has made a good move not to repeal this act.
