I opened the Bible app, determined to go to the Devotions section. I had barely used the app over the past six months save for the occasional verse highlight or creating a verse image that stood out to me which I wanted to share. Twiddling through the devotionals, John Piper's name stood out to me. The title of the devotional was God's Pleasure with Creation.
It was a simple devotion on Psalm 115, and at the bottom, a link to Psalm 135 on the same topic. And what was the message all about? Simple, it's God's complete sovereignty over all creation and time. Everything that has come to pass has been created and allowed by His pleasure.
"But our God is in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased." (Psalm 115:3)
What a wonderful revelation, that our infinite, omniscient Creator, completely good and completely just, completely loving and completely wise, is in complete control over everything, and nothing frustrates Him as He does everything for His pleasure. For sure I do know I am safe in the arms of an everlasting God who knows me and loves me and who does not have "helpless" in His being. Realising the gravity of this truth is perhaps one of the most comforting experiences that has come to me, and each iteration of this truth deepens and darkens the glory of the blessed reality that I am living.
And yet, while I was making my way to church today and dwelling on what I had just learnt, the multitude of individuals and their faces came to my conscious thoughts. Some of them were good looking and pleasant, some not so much. I was all ready to silently judge those who don't look good, having wanted to have an opinion on them and their lifestyles. But the thought came back to me. "He had done whatsoever he hath pleased." Thus saith the Lord, man and women He created them all, as He pleased. Who am I to judge them based on their outward appearances? He created all creation and it was good. And if my Almighty one says it is good, then who am I to say otherwise?
Today's was a lesson in humility and a lesson in understanding the beauty of Creation as it is. To live in the present and know God's hand touches every aspect of our life and that He does it for our ultimate good. Today's was also a lesson not to judge others carelessly. "Judge not, that ye be not judged." (Matthew 7:1)
